The Bottle Is Made. Two Years, One Idea, and the Finishing We Kept for Ourselves.

After two years of design and trials, the parts of our bottle have come off the production line and are about to ship. Each one will then be finished by hand. Launch is close.

The parts of our bottle have come off the production line. The glass bodies and the caps are finished and packed; the pump, the last of the three components, is the last to come off its own line, due within days. The whole lot then goes to sea. Two years after we first drew it, the object exists — in pieces, unfinished, exactly as we asked for it.

This post is about what those two years were, why the bottle is arriving deliberately incomplete, and what happens between now and the day you can hold one.

Two years, for a bottle

We have written about this bottle twice before: why it is designed to look broken, and why making that is the hard part. The short version, for anyone arriving now: our whole brand rests on the idea that the marks of what you have lived through are not something to hide. Own Your Scars. A bottle that shows a crack instead of concealing one is that idea in glass. It only looks broken. It has to be completely sound.

The design itself was developed together with Japanese designers — the same people who shaped the rest of what we make — over many months of drawings, models and rejected versions. The silhouette borrows from chigiri, the butterfly-shaped joint Japanese woodworkers use to hold a split board together and make it stronger than it was. That is the whole brief in one object: the fracture, and the thing that holds it.

Then came the part nobody drew. Turning a rendering into thousands of identical, safe, fillable, shippable objects with a deliberate flaw in each one is not what glass factories are built to do. A glass maker spends a career removing exactly what we were asking for. We took the idea from workshop to workshop across several countries and were told, politely and repeatedly, no. When we finally found a manufacturer willing to try, the real work began: months of trials, alongside their engineers, on how to put a crack into a bottle and keep the bottle whole.

The method that emerged is simple to describe and hard to do. The front face of the bottle carries a shallow recess. Into that recess goes a thin plate of glass. The plate is cracked — lightly, by hand, so that every fracture is different — and then sealed under a clear resin that fills the break, locks every edge, and leaves a surface you can run a thumb over without feeling anything but glass. The crack becomes a permanent, harmless, three-dimensional event under a smooth skin.

Getting that to look like something happened to the glass, rather than something printed on it, took most of this year. In June we showed you the table of samples that were each wrong in exactly one way. By July we had a method that worked — and a decision to make about who would run it.

What "finished" means, and why we stopped short of it

Here is the decision that shaped the last two months.

Once the method worked, the obvious next step was to let the factory run it: bottle, plate, crack, resin, polish, done, over and over. We chose not to. The bottles are being delivered as semi-finished parts — the glass body with its empty recess, the caps, the pumps, and the plates and sealing materials packed separately — and the final steps will happen here, one bottle at a time, by hand.

Three reasons, in the order they mattered.

First, time. The finishing process at the factory is slow — the cracking and curing add weeks to a production run — and our fragrance has been ready and waiting for its bottle for longer than we would like. Taking delivery of the parts now, and finishing them ourselves as we fill, lets the launch move.

Second, the method is still improving. Every time we finish a bottle we learn something about the break — how hard to strike, where, how the resin behaves at the edge of the fracture. If that knowledge lived in a factory on the other side of the world, each improvement would cost a production cycle. Keeping the last steps in our own hands means we can change the method on a Tuesday and see the result on a Wednesday. When it is settled, we will hand it back to the factory for the next run. For the first one, we would rather hold it.

Third — and we will admit this is not a purely practical reason — the making is part of what we are selling. Every bottle in the first release will have been cracked by a person, and no two cracks will match. We intend to show that, not describe it.

There is a cost to this we will be honest about. We have never finished bottles at this scale by hand. It will be slower than a line. Some will not pass. The first release will arrive a little later than a factory-finished one would have, and every bottle in it will be slightly different from the next — which, given what the bottle is for, is the point rather than the problem.

What happens now

The order of operations from here is fixed, even if the dates are not.

  1. The crate sails. Three components, plus the printed sleeves that wrap the box, travelling together. Weeks at sea, then customs, then our warehouse.
  2. The bottles are filled in France, where our perfumer works, by the laboratory that handles her production. They go out with empty recesses and come back holding the fragrance.
  3. Each bottle is finished here. Plate, crack, resin, polish. Then the label, the sleeve, the box — all of which are already made and waiting, as regular readers of this Journal will know from the packaging posts of the summer.
  4. Then it launches.

We are not going to put a date on the last line, because the honest answer is that it depends on a ship, a customs office and a resin curing time, and we have been wrong about dates before. What we can say is that for the first time in two years, nothing on that list is a question of whether. It is only when.

What we would say to anyone building an object from nothing

Three things, since this Journal is partly written for people doing what we do.

  • Expect the people who say no to be right about the difficulty and wrong about the possibility. Every refusal we received was technically well-founded. The bottle still exists.
  • Decide early what you will keep in your own hands. Outsourcing everything is the fast path until the thing you outsourced is the thing that makes you different. Then it is the slow one.
  • The last ten percent is where the object becomes yours. Ours turned out to be a crack, a plate of glass and a clear resin. Yours will be something else. Keep it close for the first run, at least.
