The house
We started SHŌ ITO to bottle what cannot be repeated.
Every harvest is a little different. Every blend, even from the same hands, is a little different. We were not interested in pretending otherwise. The brands we admire most have always treated the unrepeatable as a feature rather than an inventory problem.
We are an independent house. We sell on the open web, only on the open web, and we ship one fragrance at a time. Each fragrance is made in a small batch and not made again. We invest the saved retail margin into the formula — into raw materials a brand at our scale could not otherwise afford.
The brand is named after its founder. The work is not about him. The work is about the bottle in front of you, and the question of whether what is inside it belongs to you.
The formula
Not the markup
We invest in the formula. The depth of the perfume comes from the materials.
We would rather make one good bottle once than many compromised bottles often.
SHŌ ITO is led by Sho Ito, its founder. We work with an independent perfumer in Grasse and a small team across Europe and Japan. The names that matter are the suppliers, the perfumer, and the people who hand-finish each bottle. We will write about them, in time, in the Journal.
The perfume is made by a person. An independent perfumer in Grasse decides the formula — the proportions, the corrections, the moment it is finished. No machine makes that call here, and none ever will.
The rest of the house is small, and we would rather be plain about it. We use modern tools to help us write and to make images, and to keep a company of this size moving. Nothing is published without Sho Ito reading it and approving it. The judgement is his. So is the responsibility.
We would rather tell you this than have you wonder.
