What Is Perfume Actually Made Of? Mostly Alcohol — Here's Why
Most of the liquid in a perfume bottle is not perfume — it is denatured alcohol. Here is what that alcohol is, why it is there, and why it tastes bitter.
Open any bottle of fine fragrance and the large majority of what is inside is not fragrance. It is alcohol — specifically, alcohol that has been deliberately made undrinkable. Depending on the concentration, most of the liquid you paid for — commonly three-quarters of it, and for lighter formats a good deal more — is carrier.
That sounds like a complaint. It isn't. The carrier is doing real work, and once you understand what it does, a few things about wearing perfume stop being mysterious. This article explains what the alcohol is, why it is there, why it is bitter, and how to read it on an ingredient list.
What is actually in a bottle of perfume?
A finished fragrance is usually three things:
- The concentrate — the aromatic materials themselves. Naturals, synthetics, and the accords built from them. This is the part people mean when they say "perfume".
- Ethanol — the carrier, and by volume the largest component of almost every fine fragrance.
- A little water — often a few percent, sometimes none.
Some formulas also carry a small amount of a non-volatile solvent or an antioxidant or UV filter, but those are minor by volume.
Concentration is simply the percentage that item 1 occupies. That is the whole meaning behind the words extrait, eau de parfum and eau de toilette — and none of those words is defined by law, so the ranges differ by house. We set out the usual ranges in a separate article on concentration. What matters here is the arithmetic on the other side: whatever the concentrate does not occupy, the carrier does.
Why alcohol, and not something else?
Ethanol is not a default that nobody questioned. It does four jobs at once, and very little else does all four.
It dissolves almost everything a perfumer uses. A composition mixes materials with wildly different chemistry — light citrus terpenes, heavy resins, waxy absolutes, crystalline synthetics. Ethanol holds them in a single clear solution. Water alone will not; most aromatic materials are barely soluble in it.
It has almost no smell of its own. A carrier that contributed its own character would be a fifth ingredient in every formula ever made.
It evaporates at skin temperature. This is the important one. A perfume that stayed put would not reach anyone's nose, including yours. Ethanol leaving your skin is what lifts the volatile top materials into the air with it. What you experience as a fragrance "opening" is, mechanically, a solvent departing and taking the lightest molecules along.
It keeps the product stable. At the levels used in fine fragrance, ethanol is inhospitable to microbial growth. It is part of why a bottle of perfume does not need the preservative system a water-based cream does, and why a well-stored bottle keeps for years.
Why is perfume alcohol "denatured"?
Because otherwise it would be a drink, and taxed like one.
Ethanol fit for perfumery is the same molecule as the ethanol in spirits. Across the EU, alcohol is subject to excise duty — a tax aimed at beverages. Under Council Directive 92/83/EEC, alcohol that is genuinely not intended for human consumption can be relieved of that duty, but only if it has been denatured: treated with additives that make it unfit to drink.
Here is the part most explanations get wrong. There are two different denaturing regimes, and perfume uses the less famous one.
Completely denatured alcohol (CDA)
This is the industrial kind, under Article 27(1)(a). The European Commission publishes a common "Euro" formulation: per hectolitre of absolute alcohol, one litre of methyl ethyl ketone, one litre of isopropyl alcohol, and one gram of denatonium benzoate. The Commission's own description of those three is instructive — the ketone is "a smelling agent", the isopropyl alcohol is "a chemical analytical marker", and the denatonium benzoate is "a tasting agent".
A smelling agent. This is exactly why perfume cannot use it. Deliberately adding a solvent with its own aggressive odour to a fragrance would be self-defeating.
Partially denatured alcohol (PDA)
So perfume uses Article 27(1)(b) instead: partial denaturing, where member states authorise their own national processes. The Commission spells out why the category exists — it covers products "not intended for human consumption but for which the rules on completely denatured alcohol are not suitable", and the examples it gives begin with cosmetics and perfumes.
In practice the denaturants chosen for fragrance are ones that a nose will not notice: small quantities of things like tert-butyl alcohol, plus a bitterant — usually denatonium benzoate, one of the most bitter compounds known, added at a level far too low to smell but more than enough to make a mouthful unpleasant.
That is the honest answer to a question people occasionally ask about perfume: yes, it is deliberately made to taste appalling, and no, that is not about you.
How to read it on the label
On an ingredient list, denatured alcohol appears one of two ways.
- "Alcohol Denat." — the general INCI term. This is what you will see on most European bottles, usually as the first ingredient, because it is the largest one.
- "SD Alcohol 40-B" or similar — the United States convention, naming the specific formula. In US federal regulation (27 CFR 21.76), Formula No. 40-B is defined as, per 100 gallons of alcohol, "One-sixteenth avoirdupois ounce of denatonium benzoate, N.F., and 1/8 gallon of tert-butyl alcohol" — and the authorised uses listed for it include, in the regulation's own words, "perfumes, toilet waters and colognes".
If you have ever wondered why "Alcohol Denat." sits at the top of the list on a bottle you love, that is why. INCI lists run in descending order of quantity, and the carrier is the biggest thing in the bottle.
What the alcohol means for you
Three practical consequences.
The first few seconds are mostly solvent. The sharp, slightly cold, faintly spiky impression in the first moments after spraying is largely ethanol flashing off. It is not the perfume's character; it is the perfume's character arriving. This is the single best reason not to judge a fragrance at the counter in the first thirty seconds.
Perfume is a flammable liquid. This is not a technicality. Ethanol at these levels makes a finished bottle a regulated dangerous good in air transport — which is why sending perfume across a border is a licensed activity rather than a postage question. "Alcohol-free" perfumes are a different product, not a purer one. Oil-based and water-based fragrances exist and some are lovely, but they behave differently: without a volatile carrier lifting the top materials, they sit closer to the skin and open far more slowly. That is a legitimate choice about behaviour. It is not an upgrade, and it is not the same thing in a healthier form.
How we think about it at SHŌ ITO
Our debut fragrance is an extrait de parfum at 25% concentration, a figure we published here in June. Run the arithmetic and about three-quarters of that bottle is still carrier.
We want to be straightforward about what that does and does not mean.
It does mean the opening behaves differently. Proportionally less solvent leaves the skin in the first minutes, so there is less of the cold flash at the top and the materials are present from earlier on. If you are used to lighter concentrations, an extrait can seem slow to start. It is not being shy; there is simply less of a departure happening.
It does not mean the number is a quality score. A higher percentage is a decision about the shape of the experience — how the thing unfolds, how close it stays — not a measure of how good the materials inside it are. A 25% extrait built from mediocre materials is a mediocre perfume in greater quantity.
And we are not going to try to sell you the carrier. Denatured alcohol is a commodity input, essentially the same class of material across the entire industry, and any house implying that its solvent is a point of difference is reaching. The interesting decisions in a fragrance are made in the other quarter of the bottle. That is where we would rather be judged.
The short version
