The Hidden Nose and This Journal: How We Write to You

We write in two places, and we want to be clear about both before you decide whether to read either of them.

One is The Hidden Nose, a private newsletter we send every Sunday to people who chose to be there. The other is this Journal, the public space you are reading right now. They are written by the same team but they do different work, and they keep different rhythms. This piece is a short map of both, so you know what you are signing up for if you sign up at all, and what you can keep reading even if you don't.

What The Hidden Nose is

The Hidden Nose is a weekly letter. It goes out every Sunday, in the same window each week, to a list of people who entered their email on the homepage of shoitotokyo.com and asked us to send it. There is no other way onto the list. We do not buy lists, we do not import contacts, and we do not surface the letter on Instagram or in advertising. If you receive it, it is because you asked.

Each issue has the same three sections, in the same order, so you can find what you came for quickly:

Industry Watch. A short, edited read of what moved in the perfume world that week. New launches we found interesting, a regulatory shift worth knowing about, a quiet pattern across several houses, an auction price that says something about the market. We try to write the version we wish someone had handed us when we were starting out, with names and dates and enough context to follow up if you want to.

Hidden Note. A single material, technique, or olfactory idea, explained slowly. One week it might be a raw material like ambrette seed; another week it could be the difference between cold enfleurage and modern solvent extraction. The aim is for you to come away with one piece of working knowledge you didn't have on Saturday.

Curiosities. A short closing section: a fragrance book worth borrowing, an exhibition opening in Paris or Tokyo, a piece of perfumer history we stumbled across that week. Smaller, lighter, the kind of thing you can read with one hand on a coffee cup.

What the letter does not contain: discount codes, urgency language, or promotional pushes. We don't run sales, and we don't manufacture scarcity inside the letter. When a release is coming, subscribers do hear about it earlier than the public, but the letter itself is not a sales channel. It is a weekly reading habit.

What this Journal is for

This Journal is the public side of how we write. You don't need an account, you don't need to subscribe, and you don't need to be on any list. If you found this page through a search engine or a link, you are already in the right place.

We publish two kinds of pieces here:

Educational essays. Longer pieces about perfumery and olfaction, written for someone who is genuinely curious but not yet inside the industry. What maceration is and why some houses skip it. How natural and synthetic ingredients differ in practice, beyond the marketing line. Why the same fragrance can read differently on two people. We try to write these so that a beginner can follow them and a working perfumer wouldn't roll their eyes at the technical claims.

The Hidden Nose and This Journal: How We Write to You

Production notes. Honest write-ups from inside the work. The day a glass shipment cleared customs. What a CPSR safety dossier actually involves. Why a launch slipped by three weeks. What we learned from a workshop visit in Grasse or Guangzhou. These are not press releases. They are closer to the studio diary you'd keep yourself if you were running a small house.

The Journal is longer-form than the letter, more openly informational, and structured for both human readers and the search engines that lead them here. It is the place we go when an idea needs three thousand words and a few footnotes, not three hundred and a quiet tone.

How the two relate

If you only want to read one, here is the simplest way to choose.

The newsletter is for the people who want a quiet weekly note from us, in their inbox, on a predictable day, with a stable shape. The Journal is for anyone curious about the deeper why, in their own time, without subscribing to anything.

The two do borrow from each other. Sometimes a thread we touch lightly in The Hidden Nose on a Sunday becomes a long Journal essay later in the month. Sometimes the reverse: a Journal piece on, say, the economics of natural oud will get a shorter follow-up in the letter for readers who want the practical takeaway. Subscribers also receive earlier notice on releases, an occasional invitation to a studio visit, and a heads-up when a rare ingredient has come in that we want to talk about before it appears in a finished bottle.

The principle behind both

We want to be straightforward about one thing, because we think it matters more than the content itself.

You can leave the newsletter at any time. There is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of every issue, and using it removes you from the list immediately. We will not ask why, we will not send a save-the-relationship email, and we will not slow the process down. If a weekly letter stops being useful, that is a perfectly good reason to stop receiving it.

This Journal will keep going regardless. We don't gate it behind subscription, we don't paywall older posts, and we don't track you across the rest of the internet to decide what you see next. If you read here once a year and never sign up for anything, that is also fine. We would rather have a reader who chooses to come back than a subscriber who feels stuck.

That distinction, between attention given and attention extracted, is the line we try to keep on the right side of in everything we publish.

If you'd like the letter

The signup form lives on the homepage of shoitotokyo.com. Enter your email, and a short Welcome note from us arrives within a few minutes. After that, you'll see The Hidden Nose on Sunday.

If you'd rather not, you can keep reading here. New Journal entries go up regularly, and you can always reply to anything we write, in the letter or the Journal, by sending a note to info@shoitotokyo.com. A real person on our side reads it.

That is the whole map. Two places, one philosophy: write only what we would want to read, and never make leaving harder than arriving.
