How We Hand-Crack Every SHŌ ITO Bottle: Notes from the Workshop

Every SHŌ ITO bottle arrives with a crack across its face. We get emails about this almost every week. The subject lines are some version of the same question: Is my bottle broken? Did it crack in shipping? Should I send it back?
The answer is no. The crack is meant to be there. We placed it. It is the most deliberate, most labor-intensive, most argued-over feature of the whole object — and it is the reason we cannot make these bottles quickly, or in the kind of quantity a single workshop cannot manage.
This article is the long version of the answer. We will walk through how the bottle is engineered, why we chose to crack the glass instead of printing or etching the effect, how we test that the bottle is safe, and what to do if the crack runs in a direction you don't like. The thesis: own your scars
SHŌ ITO has one sentence at the center of it: own your scars. Everything we make is a translation of that sentence into a different medium. The perfume is one translation. The bottle is another.
The bottle is not decorative. It is the brand's argument made physical. When something is broken and put back together, it can become more interesting, not less. People often reach for the kintsugi comparison here, and it is close enough to be useful — but it is also a little misleading, because there is no gold in our bottles. There is no repair. There is just a fracture, openly admitted, left to be itself. More honest, because nothing here is gold.
We wanted the object that sits on your dresser to say the same thing the perfume says when it dries down on your skin: I have lived. A bottle that is too clean, too perfect, too proud of its own surface, would contradict that. So the bottle wears its history on its face.
How the bottle is built
Now to the part that engineers ask about. The bottle is not a single piece of cracked glass — that would not pass safety testing, and we would never ship it. It is a multi-shell pressed-glass construction with a thin laminate film bonded between the layers.
Here is the simple version of how it works. The outer shell is the layer you see and touch. This is the layer that gets cracked by hand. The crack you trace with your fingernail is real glass, fractured, not printed and not etched. The inner shell holds the perfume. It is fully intact, pressure-tested at the factory, and never touched in the cracking process. Between the two shells, a thin transparent laminate is bonded. The laminate has two jobs: it stops the fracture from propagating inward, and it keeps the outer shell mechanically attached to the inner one even after the crack is placed.
What this means in practice: when you look at a SHŌ ITO bottle, you are seeing the outer fracture floating over an intact reservoir of perfume. The crack you see does not communicate with the liquid inside. The fracture stops at the laminate. The two shells move as one piece because of the bond between them. This is the part that took the longest to engineer, and it is the part that lets us hand-crack the outer surface without compromising the bottle as a vessel.
None of this is unprecedented. Multi-shell pressed glass and inter-layer lamination are established techniques in luxury packaging. What is unusual is using them to deliberately fracture the visible surface, instead of using them to make the surface more pristine. We are deploying engineering normally used to hide flaws, in order to commit one on purpose.
One detail that surprises people: the crack does not weaken the bottle as a whole. Because the outer shell is bonded to the inner one through the laminate, the cracked layer behaves more like a textured skin than a structural component. The inner shell, which is what actually holds the perfume under pressure, was never the layer being fractured. So when you handle a SHŌ ITO bottle, the structural job of holding liquid is being done by an intact, pressure-tested vessel — and the fracture you see is happening on a layer that was never asked to do that job in the first place.
Why this requires hand-work
This is the question that comes up in every meeting we have about scaling: why not automate the cracking step? A machine could do it faster and cheaper. The honest answer is that a machine could do it — and that is exactly the problem.
Machine-cracked bottles would all crack the same way. The fracture pattern would become a logo. The first hundred would feel intentional; the thousandth would feel like a print run. The randomness is the design. If you receive a bottle and trace the line on the front, you are tracing a fracture that does not exist anywhere else. Two SHŌ ITO bottles with identical cracks would mean we had failed.
So the cracking is done by hand, one bottle at a time, under controlled pressure. A small workshop in Guangzhou does this work for us. We are not allowed to share the names of the craftsmen who place these fractures, but they have placed thousands of them now, and the practiced unevenness of the line is what makes each bottle feel like a single object rather than a unit. The hand is what makes it a scar instead of a graphic.
We accept what this constrains. We will never order fifty thousand bottles. We will never run a flash sale that requires a warehouse of stock. The pace of the work is set by how many bottles a small team of people can crack carefully in a day, and we have built the rest of the brand around that pace. Limited releases, infrequent drops, the kind of quantity a single workshop can manage — these are the consequences of the choice, not the marketing of the choice.
How we test that the bottle is safe
A bottle that looks broken raises an obvious question: is it actually safe to ship, store, and use? We took this seriously, because a perfume that leaks is not a perfume — it is a small disaster in your bag. Before we shipped any of these bottles to a customer, we ran them through a battery of tests designed to break them.
We held filled bottles at 60°C for an extended period, the kind of heat a parcel might experience inside a delivery van in summer. We froze filled bottles for 24 hours, simulating air-freight conditions. We dropped bottles, deliberately, twice each, onto a tiled floor. We shipped bottles internationally, end-to-end, including handoffs at customs. None of the bottles in any of these tests leaked. The outer crack remained where we put it. The inner shell remained intact. The laminate held.
When we say the bottle is "pressure-tested," this is what we mean in plain language: we filled it, applied internal pressure higher than anything the bottle would ever encounter in normal use, and watched whether the seal held. It did. The same test was repeated after the outer shell had been cracked, to verify that the cracking step did not change the result. It did not. We are not certifying that no SHŌ ITO bottle will ever fail, because no manufacturer of anything can honestly promise that. What we can say is that the cracked face is a feature, not a fault, and the inner vessel that actually holds your perfume is built to the same standards as a bottle without a crack.
We will keep testing as we run more batches. Each new run goes through the same cycle — heat, freeze, drop, transit — before any of it ships. If we ever find a problem, we will write about it here, in the same level of detail. This is not a section of the brand we want to be quiet about.
If your crack runs the wrong way
Here is the policy that surprises people the most. Because each bottle is cracked individually, the direction and shape of the fracture differ from bottle to bottle. Most people open the box, see the crack, and feel like they were given the right one. Some people don't. The fracture runs across the face in a way that bothers them. It cuts in the wrong direction. It feels off.

We have written a long article about a piece of glass, but the bottle is not really the point. The point is what you do with what has happened to you. The fracture on the front of the bottle is a small, repeatable, manufacturable version of a much larger argument: the things that have marked you are not problems to be hidden, polished out, or apologized for. They are part of why you are interesting. They are part of why anyone, including you, would want to come close.
